Super Lyan Amsterdam is the brand new bar from World renowned mixologist Mr Lyan (aka Ryan Chetiyawardana). Set on the ground floor of a design-led hotel in a historic 17th-century Dutch townhouse, it’s his first venue out of the UK.
The Mr Lyan team wanted the identity to reflect the personality of the brand—innovation, ‘elevated irreverence’, humour and dedication to craft. The all-day bar serves up stroopwafels, donuts and coffee by day, cocktails and snacks by night.
We wanted to create a visual identity that felt just as exciting as the cocktails being served. Both the Super Lyan wordmark and the lightning bolt ‘S’ mark are a modern take on the world of comic books. Super, but in a subtle way.
The illustrations add a dark and playful twist on the classic. They feature in the menus as pin badges binding the pages together, another unconventional play on the traditional.
“Magpie managed to create the character that was actually at the core of what I wanted the brand to stand for; and they managed to personify this in a way that I couldn’t have described. This to me is the crux of great design – not only did it answer the (difficult) question, it managed to create a layer to the business/brand that we hadn’t envisioned."
